CILT Sector Update: New Zealand fuel stocks amid Middle East tensions
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has released an update on New Zealand’s fuel stocks in response to the evolving conflict in the Middle East and its potential impact on global oil shipping routes.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy supply corridors, carrying around 20% of globally traded oil. Slower tanker movements through the strait have raised concerns about possible impacts on international fuel supply chains, including those supplying New Zealand.
MBIE reports that fuel companies operating in New Zealand are not currently experiencing supply chain disruptions.
For those involved in transport, shipping, logistics, freight, aviation and wider business operations, fuel availability remains a key indicator of supply chain resilience.
As of early March 2026, New Zealand’s fuel cover is estimated at:
- Petrol: 57.9 days
- Diesel: 49.9 days
- Jet fuel: 46.8 days
These figures include fuel held within New Zealand as well as shipments currently en route to the country.
MBIE has also convened the Fuel Sector Coordinating Entity under the National Fuel Plan, bringing together government agencies and industry representatives to monitor developments and coordinate responses should supply disruptions occur.
New Zealand’s fuel importers are also subject to a Minimum Stockholding Obligation, requiring minimum levels of petrol, diesel and jet fuel to be held either onshore or within New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
While there is no indication of immediate disruption, MBIE notes that New Zealand remains exposed to global refinery capacity and shipping dynamics due to its reliance on imported refined fuels.
CILT encourages members and those working across transport, shipping, logistics and business supply chains to stay informed as the international situation evolves.
