Learning from experience

Recently, CILT BOP / Waikato had the privilege of hosting a deeply insightful kōrero from our latest Bob Owens Memorial Award recipient, Fiona Knight – that created space for reflection, connection, and learning.

Not only the wisdom of Fiona’s life journey was shared, but also the richness of the reflections that emerged from those in the room.

Three themes stood out:

Growth through change and lifelong learning
A willingness to respond positively to change, stay curious, remain actively engaged in life’s journey, and embrace every interaction as an opportunity to learn. There was a shared appreciation for letting go of setbacks while holding on to the lessons they provide.

People, connection, and embracing differences
The importance of helping others be their best, celebrating individual strengths, recognising achievements, and understanding that we are stronger when we work together. Competence, kindness, trust, and care were recurring values that grounded the conversation.

Purposeful leadership with humility
A can-do mindset that believes solutions exist, balanced by thoughtful reflection, evidence-based decision making, and the humility of not needing to be right. Staying authentic to your values, striving to make a positive impact, and understanding the power of pause were powerful reminders of what leadership can look like.

These reflections beautifully complemented the wider themes of authenticity, integrity, wellbeing, resilience, and service to others.

Thank you for sharing your journey with such openness and generosity. It was a privilege to hold space for these conversations, and I look forward to continuing to explore how this format can support reflection, growth, and meaningful connection.
