AUCKLAND PORT – MOVE IT OR NO?

Auckland Port – Move it or No?

Currently, it is the New Zealand Government’s position that the Port of Auckland needs to move. Several studies have stated that there there are significant environmental impacts for expanding the port in its current location and that in its current form, the Auckland port is “no longer economically or environmentally viable”.

The relocation of the Auckland port has been called “New Zealand’s most ambitious infrastructure project ever” but where it should be moved to and when is still up in the air. It is also claimed that many of the Auckland port relocation studies have been “hijacked by vested interests”.

What does New Zealand’s maritime past tell us about our future? What global shipping trends will influence our logistics infrastructure priorities? What is actually involved in moving a port? Is location really that important? Should the Port of Auckland be moved at all??

Come listen to four people who have been actively involved in the study of the Auckland port move and its effects on the Auckland region as a whole.
